In the Middle Ages, Grasse was known for its leather production. The town’s tanners made high-quality gloves that were sold to the nobility and royal courts of Europe. However, the tanning process left behind a strong and unpleasant smell.

To solve this problem, local craftsmen began perfuming the gloves with flowers, herbs, and aromatic oils from the region. The fragrant gloves quickly became a great success at the French court, and the nobility in particular fell in love with this new fashion.

That was the beginning of an entirely new industry – the art of perfumery.
